The LB Training Center was started in 2005 by Leon K. Baptiste, President and CEO of LB Electric Co., LLC. Leon used the relationships developed at NJIT as a student and as a start up on campus within their incubator program to create an inner city and reentry program for disadvantaged individuals. He was able to convince the city of Newark, under the Cory Booker administration, to allow him to employ 30 inner city kids with “on the job training”.
The LB Training Center helps provide education and training in solar technologies educating college students and teaching skills to disadvantaged individuals (inner city residents and reentries) enabling them to qualify for jobs in the solar industry. This program gives inner city kids the opportunity to learn in real time and helps provide LB Electric with a highly-skilled and loyal workforce.
One employee, a former gang member, said he was so proud to wear his work uniform, he would walk through his neighborhood during off hours in his gear and would actually sleep in his uniform because it made him feel good. It was the first time this individual felt productive outside of the streets.
